DVD Releases: June 7, 2011

Good morning, friends. It’s time to talk DVDs again. I know I skipped last week. Sorry! Drive Angry and a French movie about angry pigs are about all you missed! This week is pretty busy though. Now, it’s hard to resist a Japanese splatter comedy called Psycho Gothic Lolita and I will be checking out Exorcismus (If only because we love you, Doug Bradley!), but I can’t help looking toward sexy Korean art-house for today’s recommendation.

My Recommendation this week:
The Housemaid

A sensation at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, Korean director Im Soo-sang’s remake of the classic 1960 film is the story of Eun-yi (Jeon Do-yeon, Cannes 2007 Best Actress Award winner for Secret Sunshine), a young innocent hired to care for a wealthy pregnant woman. Eun-yi’s presence attracts the amorous attentions of Hoon, the master of the house, and he begins an affair with her. Igniting the jealousy of an older maid who knows many family secrets, Eun-yi quickly finds herself in the center of a familial power struggle. With THE HOUSEMAID Im Soo-sang brings both a keen eye for the dynamics of sex and power and a lush, luxurious sense of style.

Although this remake of the 1960 film appears to be more erotic thriller than horror, a shocking last act, the film’s lush visuals and a very positive critical reception are all quite convincing. I aim to see this soon.  http://www.ifcfilms.com/films/the-housemaid

More DVD titles released today:
Exorcismus

AKA: La posesión de Emma Evans, The Possession of Emma Evans

This dark tale of supernatural possession from director Manuel Carballo combines classic horror with riveting family drama. Fifteen-year-old Emma (Sophie Vavasseur, Resident Evil: Apocalypse) is going through the growing pains of teen life, believing her parents don’t understand her and longing for the independence that’s still a few years away. When Emma falls prey to a series of seizures that leave doctors and psychologists baffled, her parents summon a priest (Doug Bradley) to help the girl. But what lurks inside Emma is far more dangerous than they could have ever imagined. EXORCISMUS mounts to a pitch of horror from which you won’t be able to turn away.  http://www.ifcfilms.com/uncategorized/exorcismus

In Her Skin

AKA: I Am You

The desire for a new life turns a jealous obsession into a disturbing game of identity theft in this terrifying psychological thriller based on a true story. Homely loner Caroline (Ruth Bradley) longs to escape her tormented adolescence and finds a way by living vicariously through popular girl Rachel (Kate Bell), who seemingly has it all. But Caroline s longing to be someone else soon transforms her hope of breaking free of her own life into a twisted need to replace it with Rachel s. Sam Neill, Guy Pearce, and Miranda Otto all give flawless supporting performances as the parents of the two girls whose lives threaten to intertwine in a deadly way.  http://www.ifcfilms.com/films/in-her-skin

The Passing

The three Naibert children, in their teens and early twenties, inherit a vast estate from their grandmother Rebecca. But unknown to them, the family inheritance has passed from grandmother to granddaughter for centuries – and Rebecca has a long reach from the grave to assure that the line is unbroken. The first weekend in the mansion is a party for the three Naiberts and their friends – but one by one, they vanish without a trace. Is death the punishment for violating Rebecca’s spell? Are the demons that beset the young people real – or only reflections of their own fear? Is it murder, violence from another dimension, or madness? The answer lives in the reflections.  http://www.thepassingmovie.com/home.html

Psycho Gothic Lolita

Yuki lives at home in peace until one day, a unit of assassins breaks in and kills her mother. To avenge the heinous crime, Yuki becomes a demon of vengeance, donning gothic lolita clothing and using a deadly parasol as a weapon. This film marks the first starring role for Akiyama, best known for her trademark butt pose in gravure magazines and photo books, which earned her the Best Buttocks Award in 2007 and the title Bishiri no Joo (Queen of the Beautiful Ass).  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0Ki2Ce27Nc
