DVD Releases: July 19, 2011

Hey there. It’s DVD day, but it looks like we only have 2 new horror releases! It’s nice to have a break to catch up on previous titles, but I assure you… it’s just the calm before the storm. With August’s impressive lineup and the fall season directly following, the summer lull we’ve been experiencing is soon coming to an end. Until then, let’s talk about animal attacks!

My Recommendation this week:
The Reef

On the beautiful but dangerous waters of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, ship delivery man Luke and four friends chart a yacht to its new owner. Along the way, their ship is torn open by sharp rocks and begins to sink, leaving the passengers with a terrifying choice: stay on board with slim hope of rescue, or swim twelve miles to the nearest island… through shark-infested waters. When they enter the water, an unstoppable, relentless Great White immediately follows their trail for a white-knuckle chase that will fill the waters with blood! From the director of the acclaimed monster hit, Black Water, comes a pulse-pounding, visually stunning thriller that never lets go until the final, heart-stopping scream!  http://www.reefmovie.com/

If you’re in the mood for giant crocodiles, the Australian films, Rogue and Black Water, are among the best you’ll find. Now, Andrew Traucki of Black Water directs The Reef and his involvement makes this shark thriller almost irresistible to giant animal enthusiasts such as ourselves. Praised for being incredibly tense and willing to show you plenty of shark, this film is quite well-reviewed in the horror community. It’s often compared to Open Water, however, as the plot and predicaments are remarkably similar. Looking forward to getting my hands on this one soon and… then going to the beach in a couple weeks. Oh boy. We’ve got a panic on our hands.

Also released today:

A creature of ancient legend manifests, bound to protect the ecological balance of the land and killing anyone that threatens it. This elusive guardian is initially both feared and celebrated by the locals, but when a deadly curse affects them all, they must unite and recapture the monster wolf s spirit or face their ultimate doom.  Monsterwolf ImDB

A SyFy original. As you can imagine, choosing a recommendation today wasn’t difficult.
